Cal Breaux, ACE 183, R.I.P.

   Calice (Cal) Breaux, Jr., 88, passed away peacefully on the morning of August 14, 2026, surrounded by his loving family at Calcutta House at Hospice of Acadiana in Lafayette, LA.
   Calice was born on October 11, 1937, in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, to Calice Breaux, Sr. and Amelie (Melancon) Breaux. Raised on a farm, he spent his youth in the rural Acadia Parish area near Rayne. He discovered an early talent for drawing in elementary school and served as the yearbook photographer for "The Wolves Echo" before graduating from Rayne High School in 1958. Calice also proudly served his country for nine years across the Louisiana and Texas National Guards. In 1961, Calice married his beloved first wife, Gloria Ann Moore. The couple relocated to Groves, Texas, in late 1963, where he launched a lifelong career in the retail grocery business. Known affectionately to everyone in Texas as "Cal" he worked as a store manager for Short Stop, served as a district supervisor for SAK N PAK, and eventually owned and operated "Cal's" Kwik Shop in Groves during the mid-1980s. Deeply committed to his community, Cal was an active parishioner at The Immaculate Conception Church in Groves and served as President of the local Lions Club. Following Gloria's passing in 2004, Calice found love again when he reconnected with his high school sweetheart, Julia Falcon LaCroix. They married in 2006, and he returned to live near his childhood roots in Louisiana. Together, Calice and Julia, cherished PawPaw and Memaw, became patriarch and matriarch of a beautiful blended family.
   Calice was a man of diverse passions. An avid collector of coins, stamps, and memorabilia, he was particularly proud of his 30-plus years as member #183 of the Art Cover Exchange (ACE), meticulously building a collection of over 60 albums of First Day Covers and hand-drawn covers. In his later years, he dedicated much of his time to genealogy as a board member of" Breaux du Monde" carefully documenting his family's rich history, usually with a camera in hand. At home, he enjoyed tending to his many flowers and plants, and he especially loved cutting the grass on his zero-turn mower. Calice was known for his sharp sense of humor and an infectious laugh, often laughing so hard that he cried. He also deeply treasured his regular sessions with friends at the "Table of Knowledge" first at Frog City and later at Nonc Kev's.
   He is survived by his devoted wife of twenty years, Julia Falcon Breaux; son, Charles "Danny" Breaux (Ashley) of Beaumont, Texas; two daughters, Shannon Breaux Sauceda (Benjamin) of Houston, Texas; Anna Aparicio (Guillermo) of Houston, Texas; stepson, Deacon Denis LaCroix (Shawn) of Rayne, Louisiana; and stepdaughter, Mary Faulk (Joel) of Duson, Louisiana. He also leaves behind a brother, Gerald Breaux; and sister, Jo Anne Richard; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
